Ocean FCL vs LCL Break-Even Calculator โ Container vs LCL Cost
Calculate when FCL becomes cheaper than LCL for ocean freight. Compare total cost at your shipment volume and find the CBM break-even point.

How to Use This Calculator
- Enter your shipment CBM and weight โ LCL is charged on W/M (weight/measurement) โ whichever is higher: CBM or weight in tonnes.
- Get quotes from your forwarder โ LCL rate/CBM and FCL flat rates vary by route, season, and carrier โ always use current quotes.
- Include surcharges โ FCL has lower per-unit surcharges but one set; LCL has lower absolute surcharges but they add up on small shipments.
Worked Example
18 CBM, 4,500 kg. LCL: $85/CBM, $250 surcharges. 20ft FCL: $1,850 + $650 surcharges.
- W/M: max(18, 4.5) = 18 CBM
- LCL total: 18 ร $85 + $250 = $1,780
- 20ft FCL total: $1,850 + $650 = $2,500
- Break-even: ($2,500 โ $250) รท $85 = 26.5 CBM
- Winner at 18 CBM: LCL (saves $720)
At 18 CBM, LCL is still cheaper. Above 26.5 CBM, book the 20ft FCL. Note: FCL also gives you better cargo security, faster stuffing, and simpler documentation โ worth paying a small premium for valuable goods.
Frequently Asked Questions
W/M (Weight or Measurement) means you're charged on whichever is greater: actual weight in tonnes, or cubic measurement in CBM. 1 CBM = 1 freight tonne. Heavy, dense cargo is charged by weight; light/bulky cargo by measurement. LCL forwarders apply W/M to determine your chargeable units.
FCL: your cargo doesn't mix with other shippers (lower theft/damage risk), no consolidation/deconsolidation handling (less damage risk), faster customs clearance, simpler documentation, and you control the container. LCL: your cargo is handled by the consolidator multiple times, mixed with other cargo, and takes 2โ5 extra days at origin and destination for CFS handling.
